Prompt Cowboy in Claude

Your prompt library, connected to Claude. This page covers connecting, your first session, and what to do when something misbehaves.

What this is

Prompt Cowboy is a connector for Claude. Once it's connected, you start any task by typing /prompt and the job: plan my week, write the launch email, review this contract. Prompt Cowboy finds the prompt you've saved for that job, or scopes and writes a new one with you. The work happens right there in the chat: there is nothing to copy and nothing to paste. Every prompt lives in your library and improves with each run.

Connect your account

You need a Prompt Cowboy account. Create one free at promptcowboy.ai first. Then the guided way in is the connect page: connect your account. One connection covers Claude on the web, the desktop app, and Claude Code.

Add the connector manually

If you'd rather add the connector by hand, or the guided page isn't available to you, this is the address you need:

https://www.promptcowboy.ai/api/mcp

In Claude (web or desktop)

  1. Open Settings, then Connectors, and choose Add custom connector.
  2. In the Name field, type Prompt Cowboy.
  3. Paste the address above into the Remote MCP server URL field. Leave Advanced settings alone; nothing in there is needed.
  4. Click Add. When the browser asks, sign in to Prompt Cowboy and approve the connection.

If you don't see Connectors in Settings, your Claude plan or organization may not allow custom connectors yet.

In Claude Code (the terminal app)

  1. Run claude mcp add --transport http promptcowboy https://www.promptcowboy.ai/api/mcp
  2. Inside a session, run /mcp to sign in.

If you connected through the connect page or the directory, that single connection already covers Claude Code. The command is only for adding it by hand.

Your first session

Open a new chat and type /prompt and the job, in your own words. Prompt Cowboy answers first with its route: which of your saved prompts it will use, or that it's writing you a new one. It asks only the questions the work genuinely needs from you, shows you the prompt it will run, and waits for your go.

Say go, and the work runs in the chat. When it delivers, the prompt and what the run taught are saved to your library, and next time the same job starts already scoped. Your library is yours to read and edit at promptcowboy.ai.

Troubleshooting

The connector doesn't show up after adding it. Start a new chat: existing chats don't always pick up a new connector. Check it's switched on in the chat's tools menu. On desktop, quit and reopen the app.

Connecting fails at the sign-in step. Create your Prompt Cowboy account at promptcowboy.ai before connecting, then try again. The connection needs an account to bind to.

Typing /prompt does nothing. Check Prompt Cowboy is enabled in the chat's tools menu, then ask in words: “use Prompt Cowboy” and the job.

You want to disconnect. In Claude: Settings, then Connectors, then remove Prompt Cowboy. Your library stays safe in your account either way.
